Lesson 1: Respecting Differences
Lesson 2: Bullying
Lesson 3: Conflict Management
- In this lesson, students learn about respect and respecting differences. The lesson began with a game called "Autograph Bingo," in which the students were asked to mingle with their classmates and get their signature on the various squares. For example, if a student has a pet snake, he or she would write their initials in the corresponding square for another classmate. When one student gets five signatures in a row, he or she shouts "Bingo!" The students loved this activity, and they were able to learn more about each other. Moreover, the students learned about similarities as well as differences among classmates. Following this activity, we talked about respecting our differences and ways we could show respect at our school.
Lesson 2: Bullying
- This lesson teaches students the definition of bullying, the 3 criteria of bullying, and typical bullying behaviors. To test student knowledge after the lesson, they took a quiz, adapted from http://www.pacerteensagainstbullying.org/tab/, called the "Definitely True or No Way Quiz". This website is a great resource to spark conversations between students and their parents or guardians.
Lesson 3: Conflict Management
- When students are involved in conflicts with peers, they often report to the teacher. While help from an adult is sometimes necessary, students should also have the tools to work out conflicts on their own. This lesson teaches students the 6 steps to managing conflicts and how to use "I Messages." An interactive I Message worksheet can be found above, and the 6 steps are as follows:
- Begin the process by calmly approaching the person.
- Share your concern with the other person.
- Listen to the other side of the story.
- Clarify the issues.
- Brainstorm and agree to solutions.
- Bring closure to the situation.
